Medical Carbon Dioxide USP is a colorless, orderless, nonflammable, slightly acidic gas which is about 1 1/2 times as heavy as air. Medical Carbon Dioxide is used for various medical purposes. It can be used as an insufflation gas for minimal invasive surgery (laparoscopy, endoscopy, athroscopy) to enlarge and stabilize body cavities for better visibility of the surgical field. Also, in its liquid phase, it can be used to provide temperatures down to 76° C for cryotherapy or for local analgesia by external application onto the skin surface.
Airgas operates its own dedicated blending facilities as well as maintains a national network of blending technology to ensure accurate, consistent production.
Applications
Insufflation for Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Procedures: Utilized to inflate and maintain pneumoperitoneum during minimally invasive surgeries, providing better visualization and access to the surgical area
Cryotherapy: Employed as a cryogenic agent in the treatment of certain skin conditions, such as warts and skin tags, by freezing tissue
Inhalation Therapy: Administered to help stimulate respiration in patients with respiratory depression or apnea
Medical Imaging: Utilized as a contrast agent in some diagnostic imaging procedures, such as angiography, to improve the visibility of blood vessels
pH Regulation in Blood: Occasionally used in medical settings to help regulate the acid-base balance in the blood during surgeries or in ICU
